How to make home made e-liquid for electronic cigarettes

Tobacco, mentholated, creamy, fruity, with or without nicotine … despite the hundreds of flavours for electronic cigarettes available on the market, we still don’t have enough! Instead of spending years trying to hunt for the perfect e-liquid, a solution increasingly practised by vapers all over the world is to make e-cigarette liquids at home.

100% custom, 100% satisfaction: making your e-liquids is such a creative and rewarding activity that some enthusiasts have put the created e-liquid up for sale, becoming popular influencers in the world of vaping.

But what procedures do you need to follow to create your e-cigarette liquids yourself? In this article, we will explain step by step how to get your custom blend.

What is in the e-liquid for electronic cigarettes?

It is a mixture, consisting of the base liquid – consisting mainly of vegetable glycerol and propylene glycol with the addition, in some cases, of distilled water – to which liquid nicotine and concentrated flavours can be added.

You will therefore need to create a neutral base to which you can add your favourite aroma to your liking and if you wish, the amount of nicotine you need to satisfy the hit in your throat.

Are there alternatives to ready-made liquids?

You don’t necessarily have to mix your e-liquid from scratch. If what you are looking for is a vape in which you can tailor the intensity of the aroma or the amount of nicotine, there are already alternatives to ready-made liquids that allow you to do so, such as decomposed liquids.

If, on the other hand, you feel ready to test yourself with measuring cups and pipettes, read on and let’s get started!

What you need to make e-cigarette liquids at home

Let’s start with the equipment. To make e-cigarette liquids at home, you will need the ingredients needed to make your e-liquid and the equipment to measure, mix and store them.

At the hardware level you will need:

  • A medium-sized syringe.
  • A graduated chubby bottle for mixing.
  • Flasks and bottles in which to keep the leftovers of the created components.

On the most popular dedicated eCommerce, it is possible to buy basic kits containing syringes and bottles in various sizes.

As for the ingredients, you will need to get:

  • Vegetable glycerol and propylene glycol. Alternatively, you can buy a neutral base with the VG / PG ratio of your choice.
  • Decomposed aroma. You can also mix more than one to get unique combinations.
  • Nicotine, if desired.

We suggest you equip the worktop by covering it with absorbent paper so as not to get dirty, and we recommend that you use latex gloves if you are preparing a liquid with nicotine: the alkaloid can be easily absorbed by the skin.

How to make liquids for electronic cigarettes: mixing

To prepare your liquids, you must first take into account the dilution percentages of the individual ingredients, especially if you decide to mix more flavours and if you add liquid nicotine to your e-liquid.

In the beginning, it might be useful to take as a reference a quantity of 100ml of product for each processing step, which is what we will do in this article.

You can store the leftovers in specially made bottles and bottles, so you can reuse them later.

How to make e-cigarette liquids at home: mix the base liquid

It begins with the preparation of the base liquid. You will need to mix vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol in the quantities you prefer. If you opt for a VG / PG ratio of 50/50, 100ml of the neutral base will contain 50ml of glycerol and 50ml of glycol. Other very common VG / PG ratios are 70/30 and 80/20. The higher the amount of glycerin, the more dense and smoky the vape will be, especially suitable for long shooting.

Homemade e-liquids: how to add nicotine

The addition of nicotine is generally carried out simultaneously with the realization of the neutral base. This is optional, but if you choose to include it in your e-liquid, this is the stage at which you should be more careful. If you overdo the nicotine concentration, the vape may cause coughing and discomfort. On the contrary, if the alkaloid content is too low, you may find yourself compulsively flaring without achieving satisfaction.

Keep this in mind from the moment you buy the ingredients: liquid nicotine is generally sold in bottles of 10ml in different concentrations. Choose the one best suited to you – for example 20mg per 10ml – and then proceed to mix. Remember to wear latex gloves for this operation!

Since liquid nicotine is generally stored in propylene glycol, you will need to consider it as part of the amount of glycol in your base liquid. This means that if you make a liquid with a VG/PG ratio of 70/30, you will use 70ml of glycerol, 20 of propylene glycol and 10 of nicotine.

Do-it-yourself electronic cigarette liquids: aroma

Let’s now move on to the mixing of the aroma, the last step in the process of creating your custom-made e-juice.

In general, this component makes up 10% of the liquid. This means that, if you make 100ml of e-juice, 90% of this will be composed of the base liquid and the remaining 10% of the aroma or aromas you prefer. It is, in truth, a reference percentage which you will especially take into account at the beginning: through different experiments you will be yourself, with a little practice, to create your perfect combination.

Remember, making your e-juice, the only limit is your creativity.
